On May 31, 2018, we started a renovation!
More than 30 braved the elements for a one-mile Prayer Walk from EMCC’s main office to our second campus. IMPD cruisers blocked traffic and escorted us, and a few officers even walked and prayed with us. The group planned to stop and pray at six strategic spots along the way, and after the third, the skies opened up and dumped out bucket loads of rain! Drenched, but undeterred, the group kept walking and praying for this community. This kind of dedication is only a small sample of the effort that was needed to bring EMCC’s second campus to the brink of renovation.
One of the walkers, Jay Nordgaard, said, “Joan and I walked and splashed our way down 25th Street on our way to the groundbreaking. Several of the prayers had me pause as I was so moved by the words and by the significance of this event. Waving to neighbors as we walked, hearing one of the pastors from the St. Paul AME church shout out encouragement, and hearing all the stories at the groundbreaking made Thursday an incredible experience for me.”
The ceremony at Leadership & Legacy was inside (because of the storm clouds) and about a hundred attended, many of whom were surprised to learn that Mayor Hogsett can really preach it! Several other dignitaries spoke, including Andre Carson. Joan Freisen, Executive Minister of ABC of Greater Indianapolis led the last prayer of day.
The sun came out in time to do a little digging, and after the ceremonial first shoveling, there where hot dogs, chips and drinks for all. It was a great day, and a great beginning. Our Youth Department is looking forward to moving back into the newly renovated building in time for fall programs.
